Michigan State -6 at Arizona StateMichigan State needed to score late in the 4thto beat Utah State last week, and that is presenting tremendous value in this game. Michigan State is loaded. They have all their skill position guys back, 4 starters on their OL back, and 9 starters on 2017’s #7 D back. Michigan State struggled early vs Utah State, made adjustments, and shut them down in the 2ndhalf. Michigan State dominated in the stat sheet, and had two drives stall out from the 1 due to penalties. That turned 14 points into 6.Arizona State played great last week vs an overmatched UTSA team. However, there are glaring holes on this team. Their O will be good – especially passing. But their D is dreadful. Only 4 starters return on a team that gave up 450 yards / 33 points a game last year. Finally – the line is telling you what to do on this one. With only 41% of the bets, the line has gone from -4 to -6. Also, that 41% of the tickets represents 71% of the money – meaning the big money is backing Sparty.
It will be a special environment in Tempe with their blackout and coeds. Wearing black in 105 degree heat may not be the best strategy though – especially when your opponent has the deeper team. I realize that Big 10 teams struggle on the road in the Pac 12. I also realize that Sparty is a much better dog than fave. All that being said, I think we are getting tremendous value due to the line action, buy low on MSU and sell high on ASU.
MSU -4.5 @ IndyI am scared I am falling for the trap, but I’m going to do it anyway. I am big on this Michigan State team even though they have yet to show up. They dominated Utah State in every way but the scoreboard, and the final score was not impressive. They dominated Arizona State for 3 quarters, and blew their double digit lead in the last where they ran out of gas. All that being said, their defense has been stellar – 1st in the country in rushing defense – and they bring back the majority of their top 10 defense from last season. People are down on them, and I think this is a great time to get them at a cheap price.
Indiana has feasted on teams that figure to finish at the bottom of their conference. Their win vs UVA isn’t bad, as I expect UVA to surprise some folks this year. Their strength on offense is running the ball – which goes right into MSU’s strength. Their front 7 is young and inexperienced, and I expect them to struggle vs a MSU team coming off a bye. They also don’t have the talent to stretch the team passing. In short – this is a very average Indiana team.
I get the better coach, and better team that is rested in this one while laying a very small number. Smells fishy for sure, but I’ll take it.
Michigan State -2 vs PurdueThis one shows all the signs I look for. Purdue is coming off a massive home win vs Ohio State where everyone was watching. It was so emotional on every level and was a fantastic game. Michigan State, on the other hand, got rocked by Michigan. The score was much closer than the game was.
Purdue has the impossible task of getting up for this game. No way do they match the energy and intensity that they did last week. And while Michigan State has been very blah this year, they have shown up on occasion (Penn State).
I get the better defense, home field, better coach in this one with Michigan State. I get a team trying to bounce back from a humiliating defeat in Michigan State, vs a team in a huge letdown spot. I get a team that is only getting 36% of the bets, but the line has gone from +1 to -2. I’ll gladly lay a small number for that…
