PAT’S THOUGHTS:

Max’s Take:

Everyone I’ve talked to has said this is the game of the week. Notre Dame only a TD favorite over Wake f’ing Forest? Free money! Well, Wake is 0-3 and has a pretty bad ats record (0-5 in their last 5 home games) so I gave it a look.
Initially I thought that if I can buy this to a touchdown then it’s an easy ND play for me. Yea, Vandy kept it close, but I don’t see Wake having similar luck. The Irish know they have to be perfect if they want to steal a P5 conference’s playoff spot. And this team is determined to do just that. Also, Wake and Vandy are not the same team. Wake sits at 57th in S&P margin (46 offense/76th defense) while Vandy is 35th (70th offense/22nd defense). While Wake does have a better offense, I think that their 127th ranked five interceptions end up negating that difference and ND’s 5th ranked defense has similar success against this offense. Notre Dame’s weakness is their offense. It isn’t terrible but it hasn’t really been able to get going. However, Wake’s defense is nothing special and Notre Dame should be able to find enough points to cover a touchdown.
Here’s the issue, Notre Dame plays down. All three of their games have had virtually the same score of 16/17 to 22/24 but their three opponents have been all over the board, statistically. What does that tell me? This is a team that knows how to not lose, but isn’t really sure how to win. They don’t put people away when they have the chance. Letting a team with a guy like Sam Hartman under center hang around late in the fourth quarter can be dangerous. The kid’s a gunslinger (yep, said it last week too). My analytical brain says ND wins this by 14. But my football brain says if you let the Deacs hang around late into the fourth quarter, Sam Hartman is taking some shots and Greg Dortch isn’t dropping balls on 4th down. For that reason, I’m out.
