PAT’S THOUGHTS:

Max’s Take:
These are dark times in Tallahassee. I said last week that this was the worst team I’ve ever seen the Noles put on the field. Some said that was a hyperbolic analysis just two weeks into the season. Unfortunately, I believe I was proven right. FSU was dismantled in the Carrier Dome in humiliating fashion. Social media was ablaze with calls to fire Taggart and shut down the program and all kinds of other craziness. However, we aren’t here to commisurate, we’re here to look at the next week.
Aaron Rodgers said it best, this is a simple game its throwing, catching, blocking, and tackling.
When a team is absolutely terrible in one of these areas no amount of coaching, playcalling, or “clicking” can fix it. It takes recruiting and purging the weak links. That is what we have with FSU. They cannot block. For a decade they recruited poorly at O-line and masked it with stellar skill position players. But the chickens have come home to roost. Last Saturday, FSU tried ten offensive linemen, none of which have much prior experience or were above a three star recruit. Their ineptitude was obvious as Deondre Francois got hit like a piniata at a birthday party for triplets, the offense converted 1 of 14 third downs, and the only time they found the endzone was when Francois decided to run it in himself.
This week doesn’t look to be any different. Yes, NIU has a terrible offense as well and they will have trouble finding points. But they also bring a 13th ranked defense (S&P), one of the nation’s top pass rushers, and a special teams unit that’s blocked two punts for touchdowns. Line that up against an FSU unit that is still missing their best lineman, just lost another starting offensive lineman, is trying out walk-ons, and can’t keep their defense off the field, and I cannot understand how on earth anyone would think this ends up being a ten point game.
If you read about this game you will see a lot of talk about this possibly being the week FSU clicks. Anyone who says that FSU’s offense (117th S&P) will magically “click” is letting optimism obscure what we’re seeing on the field. This is a fundamentally bad football team. A team just waiting to “click” will usually display a generally aptitude for the fundamentals of football. Florida State’s offensive line simply does not. Do yourself a favor and take NIU to cover the ten points before someone in Vegas figures out they messed up.
