PAT’S THOUGHTS:

Very interested in this one, and I have some local insight.  Nobody in NC is doing shit this week.  We are all preparing for Hurricane Florence.  The players and coaches for Wake will have a very hard time getting focused for this one.  On top of that, they have a freshman QB starting in his first real game (Tulane and Towson don’t count).  They also are shaky on D.  They have significant injury issues, and their recent performances probably look better than they were.
They struggled vs Tulane.  They didn’t cover, and didn’t overpower them like a P5 team should.  They beat Towson 51-20, but there is a story behind that game.  The score was 14-14 after the first, and then Wake had two punt return TDs in the 2nd which broke the game open.  The Deacs also have 5 turnovers in two games vs inferior opponents. Scary.
BC is the real deal.  They have one of the best OLs and RBs in D1.  Dillon had 149 yards and 3 Tds last week on six carries in less than a quarter.  BC rested their starters for most of the game, and will come into the Wake game fresh.  The style of ball they play is perfect for a game that will be windy and probably wet.  The 530 start because of the incoming crowd will limit attendance and negate the home field advantage.
I’m not wild about the line movement, as 64% of the pub is on BC.  However, everything else looks like a perfect spot for a comfortable BC win.  I really like BC in this one.
Max’s Take:
Year after year, Mother Nature proves herself as one of the best players in college football. She forces fumbles, defends passes, causes havoc on both sides of the line, and can completely disrupt games. She looks to play a big role in Thursday’s contest as Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolinas. While hurricane games can be a lot of fun, keep that in mind when deciding if you want to play this one.
Wake and Boston College both sit at 2-0 this year, but their starts couldn’t be more different. Wake is 0-2 against the spread, needing overtime to beat Tulane while breaking in a freshman QB. Boston College, on the other hand, has looked dominant in both of their games, winning straight up and against the spread. AJ Dillon is a one man wrecking ball, averaging almost 10 ypc, while the other backs have also done their parts too. Boston College ranks third nationally in rushing yards per game and will look to bully Wake’s 65th ranked (S&P) defense. Unadjusted stats show that Wake defends the run better than the pass and that seems like it should play a factor. But the safe money says that Eagle’s QB Anthony Brown sitting at 17 for 23 on the season for 322 yards will be able to step up if needed.
On the other side of the ball, we have QB Sam Hartman for the Deacs. I like this kid. In high school he took a team that had never won a game and led them on an 8-win charge while racking up big numbers. He’s also a gun slinger. This kid has no problem taking a shot downfield evidenced by his 620 yards in just two contests. However, like most gunslingers *cough* Jameis *cough cough* he throws the ball to the other team a bit too often. He currently has 3 picks to 4 touchdowns and that’ll be a problem against a BC team that ranks 13th in takeaways. Could this kid be a stud down the road? Absolutely. Will he be enough to pull the upset this weekend? I don’t think so.
Boston College will run the ball early and often with just enough passing to keep the defense honest. Wake’s defense will have trouble keeping up and BC will score. Wake will probably make some big plays through the air and hang around, but I think that turnovers will play a factor and, ultimately, BC’s 39th ranked defense will prove too much for the Demon Deacons. What I’m not sold on is the spread. Since BC relies on a running game – which naturally burns clock – the weather is set to be awful, and BC will rely on turnovers, I could see this being a 4 point game just as easily as it being a 21 point game. I’m going to watch this one since its the best Thursday nighter we’ve seen all year, but due to my fear of hurricanes and what they do to even the best teams, I’ll likely sit this one out. But if your gambler’s itch just can’t wait until Saturday morning, I’d say take the boys from Beantown.
